The Plough and the Stars

November  2016

Navan Theatre Group is delighted to announce that our November production will be the Seán O’Casey classic play “The Plough and the Stars”  and will be directed by Caitríona Heslin.

Set amid the tumult of the Easter Rising 1916, The Plough and the Stars is the story of ordinary lives ripped apart by the idealism of the time. Through banter and tragic comedy O’Casey gives life to some of the most entertaining characters in Irish drama. The residents of a Dublin tenement shelter from the violence that sweeps through the city’s streets less than half a mile away. A revolution that will shape the future rages around them. What kind of Ireland awaits them? O’Casey’s drama engages us in a heart-breaking tragedy played out with stoic humour and searing wit. It is a scathing critique of the romantic nationalism of this turbulent era in Irish history. The Plough and the Stars is regarded as a masterpiece, and an essential part of our understanding of 1916.
